Hello and Welcome!!

My intention in creating a blog is to share with you what’s happening behind the scenes in my garden of herbs, flowers and vegetables. I grow the majority of the herbs and flowers that I use in my aromatherapy sprays and would love to share their beauty, growth process and messages with you. My goal is to help you connect with the medicine of the plants in a deeper way. I will also be sharing plant wisdom, my favorite recipes, gardening experiences, new product offerings and the flowers I am loving on.

What’s happening in the garden
Spring is here and with it, many things to do around

my yard and garden. It’s an exciting time, watching perennial herbs and flowers return with their beautiful blossoms and vibrant green leaves.
.
It’s also a very busy time visioning, planning, clearing out old growth and preparing for this season's harvest. I keep telling myself not to overdo it, but that’s always been easier said than done! It’s been a dry spring and I am anticipating a dry summer. I have to keep this in mind when planning, as keeping plants watered in hot, dry conditions can be very time consuming. I can already see a significant difference in plant growth from previous years where we had more rain
than this year.

This is my 3rd summer growing on the land that I live on and It’s taken me this long to get a full understanding of what grows best in the different areas. My main garden area is long, narrow and on a bit of a hill. A patch of woods borders the lower end of the strip. I’ve noticed the plants close to the tree line haven’t been too happy. They have grown much slower and with less vibrancy than plants in other parts of the garden. I am currently in the process of digging them up and transplanting them to better locations. I’ve seen the difference in their health almost immediately. Lesson learned ~ for optimal growth, don’t plant near trees. They have large root systems that span far out, absorbing significant amounts of water and minerals from the soil. The trees have however offered an advantage by providing a wind break, as well as shading different areas throughout the day. With the amount of sun, heat and wind I have here, that patch of woods turns out to be a great neighbor.

The first herbs of the season that I am always so excited to see are lemon balm, mugwort, yarrow, mint and stinging nettles. Each of these herbs appear in my sprays and are real powerhouses of energy and nutrients. Stay tuned to experience their growth and gentle messages as these beauties grow into powerful medicinal plants.

I am looking forward to enjoying the beauty, medicine and nourishment that I am creating this growing season. One of my main goals is to establish more perennial herbs, flowers, greens and roots to lessen the amount of annual planting I have to do each year. Gardening at a large scale is a lot of hard work and at times quite aggravating when navigating weather extremes and pests infestations. It's one of the most humbling and rewarding experiences you can participate in. When you realize how much effort it takes to successfully grow and preserve food, it really puts things into perspective. An incredible light is shown upon how hard our ancestors worked in order to assure our survival. It's definitely something to think about. What would it take if our food production was dependent on us again? Food sovereignty is always a worthy endeavor! Let's get started by connecting to our roots and growing our favorite herbs and vegetables. Throw in your favorite flowers for the simple joy of their beauty while inviting your bee and butterfly allies in for their daily nectar and pollination adventures.
The sun is steadily moving through the sky and the time has come for me to say goodbye. I thank you for taking the time to read my post. Until we meet again, cast your spring seeds and visualize the beauty and nourishment of your harvest to come!
Much Love & Gratitude,
Vetiver
